How Much Can You Earn in this Field?
The average starting salary for a professional with a degree in marketing is $66,000. The salary range is anywhere from $43,000 to over $155,000. This range includes positions that may require professional certification as well as additional education in the form of graduate certificates that can be found at a university. It also includes positions that have a range of work experience levels. It does not include cost-of-living adjustments or additional forms of compensation.
Professionals will find that while it is not that difficult to get an entry-level position in marketing with no university training, finding a mid-level or senior-level position is difficult without at least an undergraduate degree in the field. This is due to the fact that advanced concepts and theories, as well as a demonstration of how a student does in teams in the form of a portfolio, are necessary for consideration.
Working professionals who complete a bachelor’s degree and have around five years of experience in the field will find that their salary will jump significantly, earning them around $65,000 to $80,000, depending on their region and industry specification. It is recommended that these students invest in professional certification to command even higher wages.
What are the Various Disciplines of Marketing?
Marketing has gone through a shift in terms of the disciplines that inform it in recent times. The advent of the Internet and social media has meant that the industry has had to make a shift towards cross-media marketing. Therefore, the main disciplines of the field are advertising, analytics, digital media, technology, branding, customer experience, communication, public relations, psychology, and sociology.
There are sub-disciplines in the field as well, which, if taken with an online degree, will shift a student’s focus so that they may demonstrate expertise in this field. Some of the common specializations include content marketing, market research, search engine marketing, social media marketing and management, guerrilla marketing, and more.
Do Most Marketing Degree Programs Require a Portfolio for Graduation?
Marketing programs often require a portfolio as one of the requirements for graduation. Students will find that the portfolio is often listed as the capstone project requirement, meaning it must be completed before graduation can take place. It is a useful tool, both in the program and outside of it.
Portfolios are where a student’s projects from the entire course of study are housed. Any team projects, personal projects, research papers and select assignments are kept in the portfolio. This portfolio serves two purposes: to indicate a comprehensive understanding of the field to the school and to demonstrate talent and ability to employers.
Marketing students are always taking on projects for their courses. Some schools prefer a review of the student’s portfolio in lieu, or in conjunction with, a comprehensive final exam. This is because many departments believe that having tangible evidence of a student’s growing understanding of the field is more important, or at least as important, as marks on a final exam. It also indicates whether a student may be ready for graduate school if that is their main goal.
The portfolio may also be used in conjunction with a student’s resume. This portfolio often showcases the student’s best work in order to demonstrate to potential employers the student’s ability to take on various different projects in different mediums. It may serve the student well, depending on how seriously they take this responsibility.
