Finding online degree program information for a particular subject can be a time-consuming effort as the way universities and colleges present the information on their collective Web sites is inconsistent and at times confusing. This is the second in an ongoing series of online degree guides, in this case for certificate and degree programs in mathematics, statistics and other strongly-related subjects.
Programs in this guide are arranged alphabetically by name of college/ university, and schools are arbitrarily grouped into blocks of 9-12 entries for ease of use. A synopsis of each school’s relevant programs is provided, along with a list of online programs and example courses. Use the information presented here as a starting point to narrow your search for a suitable online program in mathematics, statistics and related subjects. Visit the Web site of any institutions that you are interested in, or contact the appropriate department, for more details.
Having a degree in these subjects can lead to good career opportunities. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) Occupational Outlook Handbook, job growth expectations between 2012 and 2022 for some common careers for graduates of mathematics or statistics degree programs is as high as 27%, possibly more in some cases. (This is compared to the U.S. national expected job growth average of 11% for all careers.) For example, for the multidisciplinary Data Scientist occupation, there will be huge demand (in the millions) for people who have a combination of math/stats, computing and business skills, for starters. This role is being labelled by some as the “sexiest” of this century. See the section “Your Career in Mathematics or Statistics” for more information on relevant math/ statistics careers and for BLS OOH links.
Notes:
- Colleges and universities may represent an academic program as being “fully/ 100% online.” However, some use this designation even when the have an in-person requirement for coursework such as a final exam. In some cases, students will be able to conduct this exam at a testing center local to them, rather than having to go on-campus.
- As hybrid programs (partly online, partly on-campus) are fairly common, we have included them in the list of programs and schools but indicated when they are hybrid.
- Some programs might be fully online but be “degree completion.” E.g., the online portion is for upper division courses, such as for a bachelor’s degree — with the lower division courses completed as an associate’s degree, possibly at another institution and/or possibly completed on campus.
- Please check accreditation of an institution before registering. Some institutions listed may not have regional accreditation. Be sure that your credits at such institutions can be transferred elsewhere, if the need arises.
- Check if you can be admitted from your home state. Institutions may not have permission to admit students living in certain states because of specific regulations.
- Because some students take online programs from the same state as the institution in question, we chose to use the average net yearly price, indicated as “Net Cost/yr.” NCES.ed.gov’s educational data defines this as being an average for all undergrad students for an institution, and consists of the average of tuition cost minus scholarship/grant funds plus fees, books and cost of living expenses. So it is entirely possible that what it costs you to complete an online program is different than listed. Rates change yearly as well.
- Average net price/year refers to average undergraduate program costs. Graduate program costs may differ. Online program fees may apply, and costs in general are subject to change.
- Because data analytics/ data science programs are typically multi-disciplinary but leaning heavily in applied math and applied statistics, they have been included in this list if they are online, regardless of the department offering the program. We feel that it is an occupation that may be of strong interest to graduates of mathematics/ statistics degree programs.
- If a program is listed in error or is no longer available, please contact us for correction.

Online Mathematics or Statistics Degree Overview
With the increasing demand for numerically-focused analytical skills in many fields, the number of online certificate and degree program offerings is very likely to increase — especially in multidisciplinary fields such as data mining, data analysis, data science. The demand for the latter skills especially is predicted to grow tremendously through 2018, and newer online programs — particularly certificates — will likely address these applied math/ statistics skills.
Online Mathematics or Statistics Certificate Programs
From what we’ve noticed so far, academic certificate programs (not to be confused with professional certification programs) lean towards being in applied statistics, analytics/ analysis, data mining or data science. In other words, applied math and statistics skills have highly applicable value in many other disciplines. Adding an applied math/stats-focused certificate to a non-math degree can increase career opportunities.
Online Associate’s Degree in Mathematics or Statistics
The total number of online associate’s degree programs in these disciplines that we encountered listed in the NCES database was negligible — numbering less than a handful. Since associate’s degrees are typically quite broad in subject matter, there is not enough scope for deeper math/ statistics skills. However, an associate’s degree can be paired with a suitable undergrad certificate in some applied math/ statistics discipline for greater career value without the necessary commitment of taking a bachelor’s degree.
Online Bachelor’s in Mathematics or Statistics
The greatest versatility, career-wise, in a bachelor’s degree in mathematics or statistics comes from applied math and stats courses and skills. Pair this with a Minor program in another discipline such as computer science, finance, business/ management, business analytics, insurance, etc., and the number of potential occupations you can qualify for increases considerably. To save time and cost, you can supplement your knowledge with free courses from learning sites such as Coursera.org
Online Mathematics or Statistics Master’s Degree
For many math and statistics-related careers, a bachelor’s degree is often sufficient. However, having a master’s degree in these disciplines means that you are qualified to teach at the community/technical college level. (Some certification may be required.) If you in fact want to teach math/statistics, but maybe at pre-college levels, a master’s degree is usually essential, along with any necessary state-approved professional licensure/ certification.
Online Mathematics or Statistics Doctoral Degree
In our initial query of the NCES.ed.gov post-secondary educational database, a small handful of colleges/ universities were flagged as offering online PhD/ doctoral programs for mathematics, statistics, or strongly-related disciplines. The data at time of writing represented the 2013-14 academic year, and in reality, none of the 80+ institutions we checked had an online doctoral program in these topics that we were able to readily locate. Should this change, in a future revision of this guide, online PhD programs will be listed above.
Mathematics or Statistics Classes Online
A number of institutions had some lone online math/ statistics classes available, whether or not they had a suitable online program. A few good starting points for individual courses at the university level are Coursera.org, Apple iTunes University, and the edX Web sites of participating colleges and universities.
Your Career in Mathematics or Statistics
Those who wax philosophic might suggest that the universe is essentially made of numbers and is therefore an application of mathematics. The fact is that mathematics is applicable to most fields to some level or another, and skills in applied math (or statistics) are likely the most valuable, especially when paired with one or more other disciplines. We’re putting our bets on occupations that utilize multidisciplinary analytical skills because of the growing amount of data that we are collecting — from the world around us, including “the Internet of Things” devices, healthcare, and even astronomy. The more data we collect as a civilization, the more we will need people with the skills to make sense of the information — as well as for people to teach how to do just that.
Nevertheless, there is still a demand for traditional skills in math/ statistics. Common careers include the following:
The listed percentages refer to the BLS’s prediction of estimated job growth for each, for the period 2012-2022. The links go to the occupation profile pages in the BLS’s Occupational Outlook Handbook (OOH) Web pages.
In addition to those occupations, there are other careers that a person with a degree in math/ statistics might go into, including but not limited to air-traffic control, cryptography, economics analysis, financial analysis, financial planning, insurance data analysis, logistics analysis, teaching of math (multiple grade levels), mathematics modeling (business, chemistry, engineering, physics), population growth analysis, social issues analysis, software engineering, sports statistics, weather forecasting, and many more.
