When calculating affordability, students must compare the cost of tuition with their possible return on investment. Attending a cheap online community college can help save money on a degree, but students should make sure that the school provides reputable, high-quality programming as well. Fortunately, there are hundreds of community colleges across the country that provide online degrees at a reasonable price. Pursuing a program from one of these schools can help you to increase your chances of finding gainful employment upon graduation or transferring to a four-year program while reducing your out-of-pocket educational costs.
Methodology
We developed the following ranking for students looking to learn more about community colleges that offer an online associate degree. Rankings were based on information provided by each school’s website as well as the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) College Navigator Database. Using the search term “associate’s degree,” we generated a list of schools from the NCES and narrowed down the initial pool of more than 100 community colleges into the top 50 most affordable. We ranked the schools based on in-state tuition and listed them in order from most expensive to least expensive. Out-of-state tuition rates and accreditation is listed for our readers’ reference as well.

Frequently Asked Questions
What are the Career Options for an Associate Degree?
Depending on your area of study, possessing an associate degree can lead to a variety of careers. For instance, if you get an associate degree in cosmetology, you may pursue a career as a salon worker, nail technician, or hairstylist. You can also transfer credits earned in an associate degree program toward a bachelor’s degree. Three of the most popular fields for associate degrees include general studies, healthcare, and computer science.
1. General Studies
If you earned an associate degree in general studies, you have several career options available to you such as customer service. Any business that deals with people requires customer service representatives to act as liaisons. In this role, you’ll meet with clients and help address any concerns or questions they have with your employer’s services or goods. You may also pursue a role as an administrative assistant, working in offices directly under the guidance of your superiors to help copy memos, file papers, and arrange meetings. You’ll also act as a representative to clients, customers, or other outsiders who contact the office. This is accomplished in person, over the phone, with email, and by faxes.
2. Healthcare
Another popular field for associate degree-holders is healthcare, and each major requires a different educational background and skill set, despite being in the same industry. If you want to focus only on administrative duties, you can become a medical records technician who consistently creates, updates, and processes medical records for patients on behalf of healthcare organizations and hospitals. You’ll record legal, ethical, and medical information. You could also become a medical assistant, performing administrative duties on behalf of a doctor and providing minor help with clinical duties like recording patient information.
3. Computer Science
With an associate of computer science degree, you can major in a number of specialty fields that guide you in different directions towards a career in computer science. A popular career in this industry is that of the computer support specialist. These professionals provide technical assistance to coworkers and clients, including software installation, Internet set-up, and email help. With additional certification, you can become a computer administrator. However, this is more of a supervisory or managerial position as you are in charge of the computer support staff and responsible for ensuring that your employer’s computer network is running efficiently and properly. Hardware updates and regular preventative maintenance are also required in this role.
What is the Job and Salary Outlook for Online Community College Graduates?
Students who earn an associate degree may have access to better pay and more job opportunities than workers who only hold a high school diploma. According to employment projections from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics in March 2018, employees with an associate degree earn $132 more per week than professionals who possess only a high school diploma. BLS data also shows that individuals with an associate degree benefit from a lower unemployment rate (2.8 percent) than workers with only a high school diploma (4.1 percent).
Historically, healthcare has been the most lucrative associate degree option, but more recently, technology-focused majors have become a better option in terms of salary earnings. According to PayScale, the highest-paying majors for associate degree-holders by mid-career salary include:
- Software Engineering: $102,100
- Networks & Telecommunications: $97,300
- Electrical & Computer Engineering: $80,800
Are There Any Hidden Fees for Online Learners?
For students attending community colleges, online degrees may come with additional expenses beyond tuition. Although distance learners save on accommodations and commuting, they may need to pay for fees related to textbooks, registration, and technology. Some online programs also require students to visit campus for graduation, practicum experiences, and orientation, which results in additional costs. Some hidden fees online learners should prepare for include:
- Technology Fees: Sometimes referred to as a “distance learning delivery fee,” This charge covers the maintenance of the school’s online education software such as Moodle, Canvas, or Blackboard. These fees also pay for information technology services and online textbooks.
- Assessment Fees: Schools use the term “assessment” as an umbrella for a variety of fees, including those related to sport facilities, libraries, class withdrawal, late registration, and first-time enrollment. Students may also be required to pay an assessment fee if they want to receive transfer credits based on their standardized test scores.
- Required Travel Fees: Not all community colleges deliver coursework entirely online. Some programs, particularly those at the graduate level, require students to attend residency training and orientation sessions. However, some schools may offer travel grants to help offset these costs.
- Graduation Fees: Regardless of whether or not students plan on attending commencement, they may be required to pay a one-time graduation fee that covers their diploma. However, this fee does not usually include the cost of renting a gown and cap.
If you are unsure of the exact field in which you wish to work or you are not interested in pursuing a career right away, an associate degree can be a stepping stone to additional educational opportunities. Many of the credits you earn in these programs can be applied toward a bachelor’s degree and, eventually a master’s or doctorate. We hope that our list of the most affordable community colleges that offer online degrees can help you narrow down your options in terms of inexpensive, high-quality academic programs.
