If you are looking for the best affordable pre-pharmacy bachelor’s degree to get you ready for a career as a pharmacist, you have come to the right place. Most pre-pharmacy programs are designed to prepare undergraduates for admission to pharmacy school. While some schools offer a traditional pre-pharmacy major, others offer bachelor’s degrees in biology and/or chemistry with pharmaceutical concentrations. Regardless of the program you choose, pharmacists need a broad understanding of communication, business, and science. The following 40 best affordable pre-pharmacy degree programs prepare students for careers in long-term care facilities, hospitals, manufacturing, and the retail sector.
Methodology
To capture the balance between quality and affordability, we awarded points to each of the following 40 schools based on three factors: tuition, student-to-faculty ratios, and graduation rates. To develop our initial list, we searched for pre-pharmacy bachelor’s degrees using the National Center for Education Statistics’ (NCES) College Navigator tool. We then narrowed down the search results from 50 colleges and universities into the top 40 schools based on the methodology. We also double-checked the information provided by the NCES with each school’s website to ensure accuracy.
Average Cost of Attendance
We started by awarding points based on the average cost of attendance. Although we understand the temptation of wanting to choose the cheapest pre-pharmacy degree program available, as you make your way through the list, also make sure the program meets all of your needs. In other words, does it offer opportunities for hands-on learning or internships? Is the concentration you want available? What are the faculty members like? For the following article, we ranked tuition based on how much an in-state student can expect to pay for one full year of academic study. We used rates provided by the NCES. We also provided out-of-state costs for reference purposes only.
Points:
Under $7,500: 5 points
$7,500 to $15,000: 3 points
$15,001 and above: 1 point
Student-to-Faculty Ratio
We then awarded points based on each school’s student-to-faculty ratio. We used this number to get a better idea of class size and the school’s overall learning environment. While there are always exceptions, in most cases, colleges with low student-to-faculty ratios tend to offer more opportunities for individualized studies, greater accountability, and the chance for students to connect one-on-one with their professors. Therefore, we awarded the most points to schools with the lowest ratios from NCES based on the following ranges.
Points:
10:1 or less: 3 points
11:1 to 15:1: 2 points
Greater than 15:1: 1 point
Graduation Rate
Finally, we awarded points based on graduation rates as this number generally reflects student satisfaction and, ultimately, success. How? Universities with high graduation rates are keeping their students enrolled right through graduation. In other words, students are happy with their decision to attend these schools and continue with their studies to complete the program requirements and earn their degrees. High graduation rates could be attributed to many different factors like affordable programs, opportunities for hands-on learning or research, experienced or helpful professors, and/or plenty of academic support. Therefore, we awarded the most points to schools with the highest graduation rates as reported by NCES as outlined below.
Points
More than 50 percent: 3 points
Between 30 percent and 50 percent: 2 points
Less than 30 percent: 1 point

Why do others make people anxious or drowsy? If these questions intrigue you, a career in the pharmacy industry may be for you. Below are some unique career options for undergraduates with a Bachelor’s in Pre-Pharmacy, Biology, or Chemistry:
- Biological Technician
- Wildlife Biologist or Zoologist
- Material Scientist or Chemist
- Microbiologist
- Retail Pharmacist
- Pediatric Clinical Pharmacist
- Clinical Pharmacist
- Pharmacy Technician
Although professionals working outside the field might not know about the many different types of roles and career options within the pharmaceutical field, there are actually numerous areas and paths prospective pharmacists may choose to follow. Aside from becoming a traditional pharmacist, several career concentrations include:
- Healthcare Decision Analysis
- Global Medicine
- Gerontology
- Pharmacoeconomics
- Pharmacoepidemiology
Though many pre-pharmacy students go on to hold positions in community pharmacies, others are employed by government health agencies, the pharmaceutical industry, or hospitals. The goal of the pharmacist is to ensure that people receive the therapeutic treatments and drugs they need for health issues. To do so, they work with the general public, technicians, and assistants to promote greater health awareness.
What is the Salary Potential for a Pre-Pharmacy Bachelor’s Degree?
Since most pre-pharmacy bachelor’s degrees prepare undergraduates for admission into pharmacy school, the most popular career option is that of the pharmacist. However, specific earning potential will vary according to a student’s level of education, experience in the field, and specific employer, whether that be a hospital or a private pharmacy. To learn more about average earnings, we turned to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) for data.
According to the BLS, pharmacists earned $126,120 per year, or $60.64 per hour, as of May 2018. The highest 10 percent of pharmacists earned more than $161,250, while the lowest 10 percent earned less than $87,790. What Will You Learn About in a Pre-Pharmacy Bachelor’s Degree Program?
Pre-pharmacy degrees are usually offered as two-, three-, or four-year programs that immerse students in coursework to prepare them for advanced study and, ultimately, pharmacy school. However, in most cases, pre-pharmacy is not direct major. Instead, students choose another related area such as biochemistry, chemistry, or biology. Curriculum requirements will vary depending on the school and program chosen. However, most pre-pharmacy programs offer courses related to pharmaceutical topics ranging from economics to biology. Common classes include:
- Pathophysiology
- Biochemistry
- Microbiology
- Physiology and human anatomy
- General and organic chemistry
- Molecular and cellular biology
If a pre-pharmacy program is not offered and students choose to major in chemistry, they can expect to cover a range of topics and conduct experiments to understand different chemical methods. This degree pathway allows students to better understand how chemical compounds work together to create therapeutic treatments and drugs. Common courses include toxicology, biomedicinal chemistry, organic chemistry, and quantitative analysis.
Students who choose to major in biology with a focus in pharmacy can expect to cover topics related to living organisms. Undergraduates learn about the formation of organisms and how they evolve and grow. Whether they study genes or cells, biology majors develop a foundation of skills and knowledge that prepares them for topics they will find in a Doctor of Pharmacy degree program. Common classes include organismic biology, genetic biology and molecular cells, biochemistry, and organic chemistry.
Depending on the school, some colleges and universities offer a six-year program that combines bachelor’s-level work with studies that lead to a Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) degree. Therefore, when researching possible programs, consider whether a doctorate is in your future. As you narrow down your options, we hope that the above list of the 40 best affordable pre-pharmacy bachelor’s degree programs serves as a helpful resource.
