Attending the best affordable Bachelor’s in Civil Engineering degree programs trains undergrads to design sound structures for the built environment on budget. Civil engineering is the second-oldest engineering field tracing back to at least 2950 BC when ancient Egyptians erected the pyramids. Throughout history, building man-made marvels like the Golden Gate Bridge, Hoover Dam, and English Channel Tunnel would’ve been impossible without civil engineers. Low-cost civil engineering degree majors produce clever innovators to make better highways, railroads, sewers, airports, and more. In 2019, the U.S. News & World Report named civil engineering the 16th best STEM job. The 306,030 civil engineers nationwide enjoy high pay plus low unemployment of 1.8 percent. Job shortages are becoming more pronounced because 23 percent of engineers are now age 55 or older. Luckily, the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology(ABET) currently counts 254 college programs for new civil engineers. Choosing a cheap civil engineering degree will help you prepare our crumbling, failing infrastructure for the future.
Our Methodology
Affordable Schools decided to research the best-value civil engineering degree programs for 2020 focused on building the backbone of cities and towns. We began by consulting the National Center for Education Statistics’ College Navigator database. Our analysts used the advanced search feature to filter four-year public and private universities with civil engineering degrees. Our results returned 250 such civil engineering options to evaluate for affordability. We specifically looked at the average in-state cost for taking 30 semester credits per year. Our article only mentions full-time, out-of-state tuition for your information. We built the following strong five-point rubric to grade each economical civil engineering degree for their in-state expenses.
Points:
Under $7,500: 5 Points
$7,500 to $15,000: 3 Points
$15,001 and Up: 1 Point
Then, the AS Staff used the U.S. Department of Education’s latest average student-faculty ratio to judge the affordable colleges for civil engineering degree majors. Student-faculty ratios are proportions that display how many undergrads there are for each teacher. This ranking factor suggests how personalized and engaging the instruction will be. Lower numbers mean civil engineering class sizes will be smaller for interactive learning. Future civil engineers will likely participate more in class discussions, co-ops, research labs, and faculty-led trips abroad. Low student-faculty ratios are often preferred for close contact to professors with real-life civil engineering experience. We thus erected another rubric to give each top-value civil engineering degree up to three points for class size.
Points:
10:1 or Less: 3 Points
11:1 to 15:1: 2 Points
Greater Than 15:1: 1 Point
Finally, Affordable Schools wanted to determine which inexpensive civil engineering degree programs had the best completion odds. We used the College Navigator tool again to record the 2018-19 graduation rate. This percentage tells whether a majority or minority of undergrads finish their bachelor’s in the “normal time” of four to six years. High graduation rates mean a bigger percentage of freshmen actually receive their diploma. Since civil engineering jobs require a bachelor’s, graduation is crucial for career success. Our team wants civil engineering majors to make the most of their tuition dollars by landing high-quality employment. We also want students satisfied by the academic environment, support services, and campus life. That’s why we devised our last rubric based on graduation rate. Our staff added up the point totals and kept the 50 highest scorers for the best affordable bachelor’s in civil engineering.
Points:
More than 50 Percent: 3 Points
Between 30 and 50 Percent: 2 Points
Less than 30 Percent: 1 Point
