40 Best Affordable One-Year Accelerated Master’s Degree Programs 2020

Thanks to today’s technology, there are more affordable one-year accelerated master’s degree programs than ever before. Working professionals looking to advance their education and credentials in order to be promoted in their current careers no longer need to spend years attending evening classes; most accelerated master’s degrees can be completed in just one year of full-time study. Aside from saving time, graduate students also save money on tuition costs. From public administration and social work to education, healthcare, and nursing to finance and project management, working students seeking a quick graduate degree in their field needn’t look long or far for an affordable one-year accelerated master’s degree program. 

Methodology

In the following ranking, we aimed to develop the most comprehensive list of the top 40 best affordable one-year accelerated master’s degree programs for prospective graduate students looking to further their education. To do this, we searched the Internet for top programs offering a one-year master’s degree. We then consulted with the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) for the methodology outlined below to narrow down the initial pool of 50 schools into the top 40 programs. We used graduate tuition rates, graduation rates and student-to-faculty ratios to award points and determine the top schools. We ranked each institution based on the total number of points earned across these three categories.

Average Cost of Attendance

Since the following ranking is centered around affordability, the first factor by which we ranked schools was the average cost of attendance. However, while it might be tempting to gravitate toward the cheapest program on the list, also consider the school as a whole, what the program has to offer and how it will meet your educational needs and professional goals. For this article, we ranked tuition based on the cost of one year of academic study for graduate students using tuition information provided by the NCES. We also listed out-of-state rates for graduate students for your reference as well.

Student-to-Faculty Ratio

We then used student-to-faculty ratios to get a better understanding of the environment at each institution. Whereas small private colleges with low ratios are more likely to offer mentoring and individualized studies, large public universities may provide more degree options and fields of study. Consider your academic background and learning style when researching student-to-faculty ratios and remember that there are pros and cons to both large and small schools. For this article, we awarded points to institutions based on the ranges below, with the most points going to schools with the lowest ratios of one professor for every 10 or fewer students, according to NCES.

Graduation Rate

Finally, we used graduation rates as a measure of student success and satisfaction. In most cases, graduate students who are happy with their academic experience at a particular school are more likely to remain enrolled and earn their master’s degree. On the other hand, those who are unhappy with a college or university may leave and finish their studies elsewhere. Although not always the case, some factors that may cause graduates to seek out another institution include unaffordable programs, poor or nonexistent academic support and unhelpful or inexperienced faculty members. Therefore, we awarded the most points to schools with the highest graduation rates as reported by NCES and, ultimately, the highest levels of student satisfaction and success.
