15 of the Most Affordable Bachelor’s Degrees in English/ Language Arts

How many times have you seen a job posting that says “good communication skills required” or similar? It should go without saying that having some command of the English language is a necessity for a career in an English-speaking country such as the USA. Some of the skills that students can gain from completing a degree in English/ Literature Arts include creativity, communication, critical analysis, critical thinking, cultural understanding, effective writing, perceptive reading.

Now a degree in English/ Language Arts is maybe more than most people want or need. There is also a stigma that an English degree is a bad career choice. However, if such a degree does interest you, you can increase career opportunities by pairing it with a minor, certificate or degree in another discipline. Sometimes a supplementary master’s degree and/or professional certificate may be required, depending on the occupation in which you are interested.

A few choices for a supplementary area of study to pair with a bachelor’s degree in English includes public relations, communications, mass media, marketing, law (e.g., judicial writing), nursing/ medicine (medical writing), film (scriptwriting), political science (campaign writer) and more. There are also closely related choices such as Creative Writing, Journalism, Linguistics — all three of which will be covered in separate college ranking lists elsewhere on this site.

What about job prospects? While the BLS (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics) Occupational Outlook Handbook (OOH) does not have a specific “English” occupation, it does profile job growth potential (between 2012-2022) of related careers:

  • interpreters and translators (+46%)
  • technical writers (+15%)
  • public relations and fundraising managers (+13%)
  • public relations specialists (+12%)
  • library technicians and assistants (+12%)
  • archivists, curators, and museum workers (+11%)
  • court reporters (+10%)
  • librarians (+7%)
  • writers/ authors (+3%)
  • editors (-2%)
  • reporters, correspondents, broadcast news analysts (-13%)

Granted, some of these occupational choices may be in decline, but most are around the national average of 11% job growth (for the same duration) for the U.S. A few are higher. Of course, there are many more potential occupations for which a graduate of a bachelor’s degree in English may be qualified. 2: CUNY Lehman College

Lehman College is a public college established in 1967 and is located in the Bronx, New York. It started as part of Hunter College in 1931, joining the City University of New York (CUNY) system in 1967. It is named after former governor Herbert H. Lehman, who was also a senator and philanthropist.

Lehman offers four English-related Bachelor’s program options — all based on its Bachelor of Arts (BA) in English. This BA prepares students for a variety of careers (some requiring advanced degrees), including becoming an editor, lawyer, librarian, journalist, public relations specialist, publisher, or writer. Each BA option requires 120 credits (approx. 40 courses), with 40-41 for the Creative Writing, Literature, or Professional Writing majors (incl. colloquium, seminar, and tutorial course options). Students in these three majors can add a Middle and High School Teaching Certificate to become middle or secondary school teachers. Students who want to become pre- or primary school teachers, though, should take the Early Childhood and Childhood Education (ECCE)/ English certification major, which requires 31-32 credits, plus an ECCE Teaching Certificate. Finally, Lehman also has four 12-13 credit, English-related minors: Creative Writing; Literature; Professional Communications; and Professional Writing. See site for additional requirements/ details, or contact the school.
